A photograph of Julie Himelein

Hi, I’m Julie.

Born and raised in Western New York, I’m a contemporary American artist with an abstract-impressionist flair.

My artist’s statement

My background

I grew up with a love for both art and nurturing others. My love for painting began at age 12 after taking oil painting lessons. Shortly after being accepted into a BFA program, I decided to pursue a Nursing career instead. For many years, I worked in the Nursing field—and later married, raised a family, and collected interesting art, longing to paint again. The many demands of career, family, and being a caregiver to loved ones battling illness prevented me from painting.

And then, everything changed.

In 2019, I took an acrylic painting workshop and found my element. With a relentless desire to learn more about the art world, I’ve studied under many accomplished artists that I admire.

I’ve studied under some inspiring artists.

I believe that curiosity is vital to being productive, and I’m enthusiastic about learning and trying new techniques to keep my work fresh and interesting.

How I create

I use a variety of mediums—mainly acrylic and oil, but I love using inks, graphite, wax crayon and oil pastels also. I start each painting by just applying paint to the canvas, thin glazes, satin medium, scraping off, applying more paint until something emerges. Then suddenly it’s like magic and the brushes and palette knives seem to speak to me and together we converse. We work in unison until every piece of the puzzle is complete and becomes a unique piece of art.

All of my art brings joy, inspiration and serenity into my world and I love to pass that on to others as well. I’m extremely grateful for having this opportunity to spread positive energy through my art.

I’m inspired by my surroundings.

My beautiful surroundings are evident in my colorful, airy work. Spending winters in Venice, Florida, I draw inspiration from the ocean, nature, and sunlight. While in New York, the fall foliage, majestic trees, and gorgeous flowers speak to me.
